Vertimowing
The goal of vertimowing is to remove thatch from your lawns
Many lawns in the Mandurah area struggle with too much thatch. If your lawn has become spongy to walk on, lacks colour, is hard to mow and struggles with hot weather then your lawn most likely needs vertimowing.
The problems with lawn thatch:
- Reduces the amount of water that can reach your lawns roots
- Reduces the colour of the lawn
- Increases the chance of fungal diseases and
- Makes mowing harder and makes it easier to scalp the lawn when mowing.
Why is Vertimowing so beneficial?
If you want to truly get rid of your lawns thatch, you need to vertimow (also known as scarifying or dethatching). Vertimowing, as the name suggests, cuts the lawn with vertical blades. This removes the thatch from the lawn which in turn:
- Increases water absorption
Lawn thatch absorbs water from rain or reticulation before it reaches the root zone, this water will likely evaporate before it has a chance to get down to the root zone where it is needed. 30-75% of water can be wasted to evaporation depending on how much thatch is in your lawn . Vertimowing removes the thatch layer from your lawn, allowing water to reach your lawns roots, which makes for a healthier and more drought tolerant lawn. - Increases the colour and health of the lawn
Similar to watering issues mentioned above, lawn thatch can prevent fertilisers from reaching the soil where they are needed. Vertimowing allows more nutrients down into the soil which not only results in a darker green lawn but also increases overall health. - Prevents mower scalping
As the thatch on a lawn grows thicker and thicker, lawn mowers are more likely to get bogged down and scalp the lawn. Vertimowing removes the thatch creating a much more uniform, more attractive grass after mowing. - Aids in the prevention of fungus-related disorders
Some fungal diseases thrive in an ideal climate of moist, wet thatch. Vertimowing aids in the prevention of these disorders.

Aeration
If you are looking to have an amazing lawn in the Mandurah area then aeration is a must-have service. Aeration reduces soil compaction, which results in four huge benefits to your lawn.
- Improves water penetration in sandy soil
Soils that are hydrophobic repel water, this is a major issue in Mandurah and the surrounding suburbs. Aeration reduces soil compaction which will increase your soils ability to absorb water. This is especially true when aeration paired with a wetting agent. - Increases the rate of root development
The more compact your soil is, the less roots will grow. Relieving soil compaction increases root growth which makes for a happier, more drought tolerant lawn. - Increases the effect of lawn fertilisers
Aeration reduces the amount of fertiliser wasted to run off and allows more fertiliser down to the roots where it is needed. - Helps release toxic gases
Toxic gases can accumulate in the soil, this is especially true with certain fungal diseases like fairy ring. Aeration opens up the soil and releases these gasses which will have huge benefits to the lawn.

Top Dressing
Top dressing is the process of adding a thin layer of soil/sand to the lawns surface.
Benefits of top dressing.
- Level the lawn surface
Using a cylinder mower on a lumpy or uneven lawn will often cause scalping. Top dressing will help to fill in the low spots in the lawn, leveling out the lawn to reduce scalping and create a better looking lawn. - Enhancing the quality of soil
In Mandurah we have poor quality, sandy soils that lack organic matter. The organic content of your lawns soil can be increased by using a high-quality soil with your top dressing service. This is especially true when paired with core aeration, this is because the beneficial soil will fill in the core holes left by aeration, providing deep soil improvement and long-term benefits to your lawns. - Help a lawn recover when it has been damaged or infected
Damaged portions of a lawn can be helped by applying top dressing. The time it takes for a bare patch of lawn to recover can be speed up by applying a light top dressing.
